CO2 OFFSET

Valuation

If you so wish, the World CTL Conference can assist you in offsetting the greenhouse effect due to the CO2 emitted during your flights to and from Paris.

The World CTL Conference will help you valuate this effect in euros and transfer your donation to an association specialized in securing rainforest acreage, Cool Earth, whose  Advisory Board is headed by Sir Nicholas Stern.

Should you wish to offset this quantity of CO2, you have two options to proceed:

  • The quicker option is to refer to the “reference table” below: you can approximate the CO2 offset amount in euros on the basis of the right column figures and your location compared to reference airports; then round this amount to the nearest 5 euros;
  • The more accurate step-by-step procedure is the following:
    1. Determine the quantity of CO2 metric tons produced during your flights: we suggest to use Air France’s CO2 calculator which can be found on http://developpement-durable.airfrance.com – information service;
    2. Valuate the above CO2 metric tons into euros: we propose €21/mt (2008 carbon rights varied from €20 to 22 in September, 2007). For more information, please see www.pointcarbon.com;
    3. Select on your registration form your CO2 offset amount (rounded to the nearest 5 euros) among the following ones:

(1) According to Air France calculation, for a round trip.
Air France calculation method is to be found on http://developpement-durable.airfrance.com – Information service - CO2 calculator – How does it work?

(2) In September 2007, the carbon market prices varied between 20 and €22/mt (source: www.pointcarbon.com).

HOW WILL YOUR DONATION BE USED?

Let's take the example of a New York - Paris round trip:

Air France evaluates the production of CO2 at 962 kg;
These 962 kg are valuated at €20, which are supposedly donated;
With these €20, Cool Earth secures 0.2 acre (0.08 hectare) of rainforest;
This secured area of rainforest absorbs 1.7 mt of CO2 per year (54 mt of CO2 are locked in).
